The mirrore d layout, old -school Kenwoo d tape deck in the Pajero was neat, but it was getting time to expand my audio options in the truck beyond an old c assette of Springteen’s Greatest Hits I had found in the bottom of a storage bin and the NPR station from a city in the next state over, when I was in the right spot to pick it up. So, yesterday Crutchfield sent a modern receiver my way and I installed it after work yesterday evening.

Unfortunately I couldn’t use the factory radio connector with an adapter harness, as I learned that a 94 US market Montero has a different connector and completely different audio wiring scheme than a 94 JDM Pajero. Fortunately, I have an English language fsm and wiring schematic for the truck that made it easy enough to work around without guesswork. I’m sure an appropriate adapter harnesses exists, but I don’t read or speak Japanese to find one from a seller on the other side of the world. I did opt to wire things up with bullet connectors to allow things to be easily restored to an original configuration.

The end result came our nicely: a modern audio receiver that does all the basic audio things of playing music from digital media or a streaming source over Bluetooth, and it plays FM radio on the band used on this side of the world.

Navigating files and folders on a USB drive with only a single line of display text isn’t ideal, but is manageable enough, I guess. As a bonus, sound quality over the six (presumably) original speakers is much improved. Reading the manual last night gave me an idea of what all the fancy sound shaping options do, and some light fiddling with them on the way to work this morning improved sound a bit further. This is, by far, the fanciest thing on the Pajero.

I don’t know why, but I always find audio component upgrades so interesting. Adding head units, speakers, subs, amps, etc. Maybe it’s because I love blasting jams with the windows down on a drive.

I need to upgrade mine from stock. I added some speakers I got for free and now it really shows that the stock one is not up to par. The one you got looks good but I would like to plug in an old ipod and it doesn’t sound like navigating it would be all that easy from the headunit.

From what I gathered researching this, a double din head unit with a touch display would really be the way to go. If the Pajero were my daily driver, I probably would’ve gone that route. As an adventure mobile this will do  nicely, and I've got plans for that second din slot below.

Nicely done! A head unit upgrade is always good, Bluetooth is one of those things hard to live without once you get used to it.

My old Mazda has an older aftermarket unit in it that's terrible and I need to replace, I'll get around to it eventually.

This was $100 well spent.  I probably should've done this months ago.

Boy that Metra harness bag brings back memories. I installed car stereos etc for circuit city in my younger days.

I’ve also ordered some front door speakers for it, and I’ve got a pair of new speakers for the dash corners to put on it tonight. I don’t feel the needs to consider amps, subs or component speakers for an adventure mobile, but it feels like matching the new head unit with some decent speakers less than 26 years old is a worthwhile idea.

Ah yes, totally forgot about the JDM stereos that only went up to 90.0 FM. Easily 95% of cars back home were JDM imports growing up and had this limitation...life was rough as a teenager when I could only listen to 3 radio stations in my parents’ car. Kids these days don’t know how easy they have it!

Indeed. In Southern NM, there is exactly one radio station below 90.0 that isn’t Jesus hour all the hours. It is the El Paso NPR station, of which I could pick up only in certain places. I couldn’t even get the Las Cruces NPR station at 90.7. I’ve listened to Springteen’s Greatest Hits many times over the last few months...

That’s one of my go-to travel albums (if you can call a greatest hits tape/CD an album?) - you could be stuck with something much worse!

Oh, it wasn’t bad at all. It was just a lot of it.
